Update From Waveland After Hurricanes
Sept. 1, 2008 – WAYLAND, MA – The Labor Day arrival of H. Gustav sent damaging winds and lots of rain toward Waveland where many people have evacuated, including the eight families (click for update) for which W2W built homes. (Photo at right shows waves from Hurricane Gustav crashing on Beach Boulevard in Waveland, Mississippi, on Monday).
The early reports (Monday) are that storm surge flooding is limited to just the immedate coast... pushing over the shore road, but not too far inland (see video below; and click here for more photos from Wavelanders via iReport). W2W committee members have been in touch with Waveland Mayor Tommy Longo to express support. Click here for Tuesday report.
Also, please note, W2W is now planning a Veterans Day trip with students to work in Waveland, instead of a Columbus Day trip. Anyone interested in participating should email either Tom Fay or Pam Lesser of the W2W committee.
Students will work on several assignments throughout Waveland, MS, Wayland's sister city on the Gulf Coast that was devastated in Hurricane Katrina three years ago.
Waveland today is slowly getting back on its feet. The inland areas are mostly clear and seeing businesses return. The bridge across the bay to Pass Christian is fully opened, and schools are seeing a return to about 50% of the number of students prior to the storm. Population figures, not confirmed, are about 50-60% of the pre-storm population.
The areas along the coast are still mostly vacant land with a few houses going up, but it's far from the quaint village of shops and homes and narrow, tree-lined streets. It's still an almost open, unobscured view to the waterfront from the town offices a half-mile inland. For the past year or so, the town has been busy tearing up each and every street to replace water, gas, and sewer lines. This tedious and messy job is only about half done, but is being funded by Federal relief monies and is a prerequisite to full rebuilding of the business district and town offices.
